Jesus said, “But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation” (Luke 6:49 NIV).
One day my husband told me, “It looks like the back corner of our house is sinking.” I was not convinced, but my blasé attitude vanished when he showed me that the first row of siding had disappeared into the ground.
“What could be causing this?” I asked in dismay.
“Maybe the foundation here isn’t good. Who knows what it was built on over a hundred years ago,” he responded.
We soon discovered that the foundation for that corner of the house had been a rock, which had shifted, leaving no support at all. It was hard to believe that someone would be so careless in choosing the foundation to support their house, but then I realized that people make a similar mistake every day. With no thought of the future, they build their lives on a person, a job, or a worldly philosophy. Then, when that foundation fails them, their world crashes in.
Scripture tells us repeatedly that Jesus is the only foundation which will withstand the storms and upon which we can safely build our lives.
Thank you, Father, that in Jesus, you have given us a firm foundation, a rock worth building on. Amen.

It may not be that the builders were careless in choosing a foundation, for the house lasted a hundred years, much longer than most houses. But within a century erosion occurs, and expensive home maintenance and repairs are needed.
The same is true in many things people once relied on. Jobs, forms of entertainment, product brands, and organizations that once were trustworthy can change and erode over time. People cannot hold onto every decision that was once correct, it is important to pray and rethink was is best for them in a changing world.
I hope that the house foundation problem was able to be corrected.
