The Apostle Paul said, “I advise you to obey only the Holy Spirit’s instructions. He will tell you where to go and what to do” (Galatians 5:16 TLB).
As I became more and more involved in writing, ideas for all the books and articles I wanted to write bombarded my brain. I couldn’t wait to get them down on paper, but other things kept interfering. Finally I decided, I just need to be more disciplined. From now on, I will not allow anything to interfere with my writing time!
The next morning before I could even begin to put my new plan into action, God stopped me in my tracks. My daily devotional calendar had this message for me, “Discipline is not rigid. It does not mean that my schedule can never be interrupted.” (Cynthia Heald) Ouch! There was no mistaking the application to my life. The message went on to say that rather than being rigid, the disciplined person is actually flexible and free to respond to any direction God may give.
I knew that God was reminding me that my commitment long ago to make of my body a living sacrifice superseded my more recent resolution. I was, first of all, His servant; writing was only one of the things that I did for Him. Nothing was more important than my availability to Him.
Father, forgive me when I forget that my first priority is obedience to you. Amen
