Blood and Dirt

For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? (II Corinthians 6:14 NIV)

I went to an elementary school Halloween parade today for Tricia*, our foster daughter. While I was there, I saw a former foster child marching in the parade. I could see that he had smeared red makeup over the left half of his face and left arm and black makeup over the right half of his face and right arm. He told me confidentially, “I’m half blood and half dirt.”

Later, I thought how symbolic that statement was of his life. He had received Jesus as his Savior while living with us and had been cleansed by His blood. Now, however, because of the lifestyle his family lived, he was being pulled back into the dirt and filth of the world.

I felt sad about what was happening in this young boy’s life, but then I began to wonder, what about us? Are we committed to Jesus Christ in every area of our lives or are we, too, trying to live our lives “half blood and half dirt?”

Father, remind me to be vigilant to resist any dirt that Satan might try to sneak into my life. Amen.
