Colorblindness is Hereditary*

Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves (Romans 12:10 NIV).
One day I overheard a friend of our teenage son ask him in disbelief, “You mean you’d actually dance with a black girl?”
“Well sure,” our son said casually, “if she was pretty!”
“What’s wrong with that?” his twin sister demanded. I knew she was thinking about the beautiful, bi-racial children my sister had adopted.
Since the attitude of our son’s friend illustrates the deep-seated prejudice of many in our small, white community, I wondered how our teenagers had escaped it. Then I realized that, in a way, racial “colorblindness” is hereditary. For example, my parents never told me that all men are created equal or that discrimination is wrong. However, they gave years of their lives ministering to shantytown people and others who had been written off by the people in the community where I grew up.
I inherited my parents’ “colorblindness” as I learned from their example that people had worth regardless of their class, color, or reputation. My inherited, colorblind genes, as well as my husband’s, were, in turn, passed on to our children. I thank God for the example of my parents who, unknowingly, instilled in us the quality of divine colorblindness.
Lord Jesus, help us to live in such a way that our children will receive a godly inheritance from our example. Amen.
