A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men (Proverbs 18:16 NKJV).
When our year of singing full time was drawing to a close, Donn announced one day that when the year was over, he did not want to go back into electrical engineering. I was stunned–thinking, “First he doesn’t want to leave his job in electrical engineering, now he doesn’t want to go back into engineering. What now?”
“So what DO you want to do?” I asked.
“I want to do something with my Math degree.” Donn had a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and a Bachelor’s degree in Math.
I suggested Donn go to the Penn State Shenango Campus and talk to a career counselor to find out what he could do with a Math degree. The career counselor told Donn that they needed a Math tutor in their Learning Center and promptly hired him part time while we continued to sing.
The following year, the Electrical Engineering professor at the Shenango Penn State campus retired. When the replacement they’d hired decided at the last minute that he wasn’t coming, Donn got the job. To everyone’s surprise, this man who had never thought he wanted to teach, discovered that teaching was his hidden gift. He loved teaching at the college level and taught Electrical Engineering and later Math for 24 years.
Father, thank you for the marvelous ways you orchestrate our lives to bring out our hidden talents, if only we will allow you to do it. Amen.
