Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths (Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV).
I had settled within myself that I wanted to write, but still I hesitated to quit my part time job at the grocery store. I was not naive enough to believe I would immediately, or perhaps ever, make much money by writing. Even though my husband was encouraging me to quit my job, could I justify lessening our family’s income?
As I stood at my cash register that day, bored and unhappy with tears never far from the surface, Donn brought me a letter from my oldest sister, Lucy. Since I had nothing to do, I read the letter. Soon I was brushing away tears I couldn’t hold back.
Lucy, who knew nothing of my situation, told me about a dream she’d had. In this dream, my husband had bought me a new car which she said represented a new life for me, and a new, special kind of pen. I knew this was the confirmation I’d been looking for because Donn, by his willingness for me to leave this job, was indeed, opening the way to a new life for me. The computer he wanted to buy for me was the “special kind of pen” that would help me in my writing. How gracious of God to give me the gentle push I needed to take the next step!
Father, if I “lean on my own understanding,” I will do what generates the most income. If I trust in you with all my heart, I will do what gives me peace. Amen.
This devotional had special significance because my sister, Lucy, passed away last August. Posting this devotional from my book, Homespun Faith, prompted me to search for the letter from Lucy I found it in a folder in my writing cabinet with the original devotional. Thankful for this reminder of how my sister, who was herself a published writer, was instrumental in the crucial decision I made to write.

Amen, friend! God is SO faithful to His children. He has plans for us that we could never imagine 🙂
I am thankful that He gave you the gift of writing! This is very encouraging and reminds me to not lean on my
own understand, but trust God since He is ALWAYS faithful! Love you!
He is SO faithful, taking us in directions we might never have chosen for ourselves but are so right for us! I’m thankful for your obedient heart, my friend! Love you 2!
