God said, “I will guide thee with mine eye” (Psalm 32:8 KJV).
I always wondered what God meant when He said He would guide us with His eye. This morning as I sang in the choir at church, I began to understand. I found that if I kept my eyes on the songbook, I could get every word right. If I watched our director’s hand, I could be almost certain of never missing a beat. However, if I wanted to tune in completely to how she wanted us to sing the song, I could only do it by watching her eyes.
In the same way, I believe we can live our Christian lives “by the book,” (the letter of the law), or by watching God’s hand, (woodenly going in the direction He is pointing us in), but if we truly want to live our lives His way, we must find ways to “watch His eyes.” We must learn to tune in to His feelings, His motives, and His desires, rather than our own.
Learning to watch God’s eyes will not happen by simply attending church services every Sunday. It will begin to happen only as we set aside time to focus our minds, our hearts, and our eyes solely on Him.
Father, teach us how to fix our eyes on yours so that how we live our lives will bring you absolute joy. Amen.
