So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows (Matthew 10:31 NIV).
Some years ago the husband of my friend, Karen, flagged me down in the parking lot after a gospel concert. He said, “There’s a girl in there who is flipping out. My wife asked if you’d come and pray.”
I hurried back into the building to find that the young woman and her baby had already disappeared. My friend told me the girl had a manic-depressive history.
As we prepared to pray in a deserted corner, Karen told me the girl’s name and the name of her parents. Suddenly my internal lights flashed on. “I’ve never met her,” I told Karen, “but she’s been on my prayer list for years because I know her mother. Last week I removed her name because she had been doing well, but I asked God to somehow let me know if she still needed prayer.”
What a wonderful reminder of God’s watchful care over each of His creation. How can we doubt the mercy and compassion of One who cares even about something as insignificant as a sparrow?
Thank you, Father, for your willingness to alert us to those who need our prayers if we will but ask you. Amen.
