Seek First

Jesus said, “But seek first (God’s) kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33 NIV).
After I left my job to write full time, I soon became aware that our finances were getting tight.  Although I tried not to, I started to worry. Our children were growing and would need new clothes for summer. Had I made a mistake?
As the children and I rode along with Donn to shop at the Mall while he went to graduation at Shenango Campus of Penn State, I carried on a silent conversation with the Lord. “Father, I thought you said you were going to provide for our needs through my husband so I could be productive in the Kingdom without receiving a salary. But as I look at our upcoming expenses, I think Donn is going to need a VERY big raise, or I’m going to have to go back to work. My eyes are fixed on you.”
When Donn picked us up several hours later, he said, “I have some potentially good news. My boss said he has put in for an equity raise for me, as well as a higher than usual incentive raise. We’ll know in a few weeks if Main Campus has approved it.” Donn explained that an equity raise was being requested because he was doing a great deal more than the person who had previously held his position. My heart was encouraged. Could this be God’s way of supplying our needs?
Both those raises were approved and once again, I was in awe of our faithful Heavenly Father who knows our needs and will supply them if we seek Him first and give Him first place in our lives.
Help us remember, Father, that you’ve told us not to worry about what to eat or drink or wear (Matthew 6:25), but to place our trust in you. Amen.
