That’s Impossible

Elijah said to her, “First make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me”  (I Kings 17:13 NIV).
While we were traveling and singing full time, we stayed in the home of a Christian businessman who had obviously prospered spiritually and materially.  This was his testimony: “God told me years ago that if I would do the possible, He would do the impossible.”
During the course of that weekend, Mr. Miller told us about many impossible things God had done after he himself had done the possible.  This principle is also found in the scripture above.  Elijah asked the widow to use the last of her flour and oil to bake him some bread.  This was to have been the last meal for the widow and her son; but God was promising that if she did the possible, He would do the impossible by providing flour and oil until He sent rain.
Here, as in Mr. Miller’s stories, what God asked of the widow was possible but not easy.  It meant giving up something tangible in order to receive what she could not see.  I began to wonder how many times I had missed out on miracles because I had decided too quickly that what God was asking of me was impossible.
Father, help me to trust you enough to obey you when obedience requires giving up something tangible to receive something I cannot see.  Amen.
