The Source

Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life (Proverbs 4:23).

For years, we had ongoing problems with rust in our water. Filters helped a little, but my whites never stayed white for long. It was disheartening. Then my husband noticed a slow leak from the  pipe that brought water into our house and decided to have it replaced.

When Donn showed me the old pipe, I was horrified that all our water had been running through a corroded, rust-filled pipe. Now I understood why I’d never been able to keep our clothes white.

As I stared at that disgusting pipe, a spiritual analogy began to take shape. Could it be that when we become disheartened about our impure thoughts and behaviors, we should check the “pipe” running into our hearts? Could it be that the movies we watch, the books and magazines we read and
the music we listen to have corroded our hearts, polluting our thoughts and behaviors? Perhaps the only way to effectively change our thoughts and actions is to replace what we’re watching, reading and listening to with wholesome entertainment that reinforces our faith and beliefs.

Father, re-sensitize me to see the effect that the values and morals of our culture
have had on my heart. Amen.
