Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? (II Corinthians 6:14 NKJV)
Almost before we knew it, our daughter, Angi, who had walked with Jesus since she was a little girl, was “going steady” with a boy from Pittsburgh who wasn’t a Christian. Everything in me wanted to forbid her to see him or to ground her for life, yet the Holy Spirit would not allow us to do either of those things. We had taught her to follow Jesus, and now we needed to trust Him.
Angi had registered for a Christian Conference before Glenn came into her life, and we were praying that the Holy Spirit would speak to her there. Later, she told us she had realized at the Conference how much she’d been missing the fellowship of Christian friends. She began to pray about her relationship with Glenn, asking God to make clear His plan for her life.
That day each of the kids at the Conference were randomly given a scripture verse to look up and read aloud. Angi’s scripture was, “Be not unequally yoked with unbelievers” (II Corinthians 6:14). Not only did God speak to her clearly through that scripture, but she also met Matt at that Conference, a wonderful Christian young man with whom she began a relationship and later married. How thankful we were that we had not interfered but waited for God’s clear intervention in her life.
Father, when fear tempts us to try to control our children rather than allowing them to hear from you, please enable us to trust you. Amen.
