Who Cares?

Look to my right and see; no one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life (Psalm 142:4).
One Sunday morning when my husband and I were scheduled to do a special song at church, I felt strongly impressed that we were to sing a song my husband had written several years earlier, “The Least of These.” The song talks about our treatment (or mistreatment) of the poor, the minorities, and the elderly.
After our song was finished, our pastor told the congregation the message he’d planned to preach that morning just wouldn’t come together. In its place, God had given him a different message titled, “Who Cares?” “We can’t say we’re a caring church just because we support oversea’s missions and have appointed Stephen ministers to do the caring for all of us. If we personally don’t really care about the people in our community and don’t welcome them in our church, how can we say we care?”
I’ve realized saying we care is easy. Supporting oversea’s missions and appointing people to care isn’t too difficult either. However, when it comes to getting personally involved in ways that take us out of our comfort zones, could it be that the true attitude of our hearts is revealed in one simple expression: “Who cares?”
Forgive us, Father, when we are more concerned about sticky fingerprints, dirty carpets and noisy hallways than we are about unsaved souls. Amen.
